Trades recruiting in Lakeland, FL

Lakeland hires in the middle of a tug-of-war. Polk County added more residents than any other Florida county from 2024 to 2025, yet its whole metro employs about 1,120 HVAC techs, 1,020 electricians, and 740 plumbers, per federal data. Tampa pulls from the west and Orlando from the east along I-4. We recruit for the independent Polk shops that need to win techs from both directions.

Who we recruit in Lakeland

Is Lakeland part of the Tampa job market?

No. Federal statistics treat Polk County as its own metro, Lakeland-Winter Haven, separate from the four-county Tampa metro, and its trades market behaves like its own place. Pay is a good example: the BLS May 2025 wage survey puts the Lakeland HVAC median at $27.25 an hour, above both Tampa ($24.30) and Orlando ($24.74). A Polk HVAC tech earning the local median would take a pay cut to work in Tampa at Tampa’s median.

That cuts both ways for a Lakeland shop. Your own HVAC techs have less reason to drive west for money. But your electricians do: the Lakeland electrician median is $26.40 an hour against $27.62 in Tampa, and eastern Hillsborough job sites are within commuting range of much of Polk. A Polk search has to be built trade by trade, not with one county-wide pitch.

How fast is Polk County growing?

Faster than almost anywhere in the country. Polk grew from 725,042 residents in April 2020 to 874,790 in July 2025, up 20.7%, and added 23,356 people in the last year alone, the largest numeric gain of any Florida county, per the Census Bureau’s 2025 estimates. The Lakeland-Winter Haven metro ranked fourth fastest-growing of 387 U.S. metros from 2024 to 2025.

The growth is concentrated in the northeast of the county. Davenport nearly doubled since 2020 (up 94.8%), Haines City grew 67.4%, and Lake Alfred 54.9%, while the city of Lakeland grew 11.5%. For trades shops that means a split workload: new subdivisions toward the Osceola line, and a mature housing stock in Lakeland, Winter Haven, and Bartow heading into replacement cycles.

What does the housing stock mean for service demand?

Polk’s homes are newer than Tampa’s but old enough to keep service boards full. The median home in Polk County was built in 1992, against 1986 for the Tampa metro, and 46.8% of Polk’s housing units date from before 1990, per ACS 2020-2024 estimates. Another 17.9% were built in 2010 or later, which is the new-construction wave now coming off builder warranties.

Storms add spikes on top of the baseline. National Hurricane Center reports document Ian’s 2022 flooding in Polk as the Peace River crested at record levels, and Milton crossed the peninsula from Siesta Key to Cape Canaveral in October 2024, passing through the county. Every one of those events produces months of HVAC and electrical work that a short-staffed shop cannot take.

How we recruit in Polk County

With a metro this size, a Lakeland search cannot stop at the county line. We source from Polk itself first, then from eastern Hillsborough (Plant City, Brandon, Riverview) and western Osceola and Orange, the areas where a commute into Polk is realistic. The Polk Parkway loops south and east of Lakeland between two I-4 interchanges, so a tech in Bartow or Mulberry can reach north Lakeland without fighting I-4, and we map every candidate against that geography before they reach you.

Every candidate gets a human phone screen against a written scorecard, credential checks for the trade (EPA 608 for HVAC, card and license history for electrical and plumbing), and background and driving-record checks to your policy. Submittals come with honest notes on pay expectations and the drive.

Which parts of Polk County do we cover?

All of it: Lakeland and its north side along I-4, Winter Haven and Auburndale, Bartow and Mulberry to the south, Lake Wales and the Ridge, and the fast-growing northeast around Haines City, Davenport, and Lake Alfred. We match candidates to where your trucks actually run, so a Haines City shop gets techs who live near Haines City.

About 1,120 HVAC mechanics and installers, 1,020 electricians, and 740 plumbers, pipefitters, and steamfitters, per BLS May 2025 data for the Lakeland-Winter Haven metro. That is roughly a sixth of Tampa’s HVAC workforce, which is why Polk searches reach across county lines.
